Wind in My Hair: A Kaleidoscope of Memories by Josephine Loewenstein, edited by Tom Perrin Presentation copy inscribed & signed by the author on the title page thus: “Deirdre & Ian Lots of love Josephine”; The Dovecote Press Ltd 2016 1st ed/1st printing, 195pp. Text generally in decent order albeit with slight browning & “waviness” to pages & an old erased pencil price/date just visible to the top right hand corner of the front free end paper, some staining to the page extremities at the very bottom, spine cocked, bumping & rubbing to board corners, to the top, bottom & sides of boards & spine & to the front top & bottom left hand/rear top & bottom right hand corners, boards a bit bumped & marked, the dust jacket has slight internal & external browning, heavy creasing to the front & rear inside blurb, externally there is heavy creasing & rubbing to the top of the front, rear & spine with a very small tear to the rear top right hand corner, a small patch of scuffing to the rear bottom edge, creasing to the front left hand/rear right hand sides, the front, rear & spine all have many marks scratches & indentations. When Princess Josephine Loewenstein published her memoirs, her friends were amazed. What would this most discreet of society figures, whose circle has included Sir Mick Jagger, Princess Margaret, Gianni Agnelli and Lord Glenconner, have to say about them all? Her late husband, Prince Rupert Loewenstein, caused a mild shock in 2013 when he wrote his own book, A Prince Among Stones, a pun on his career as financial adviser to The Rolling Stones. It bears witness to a life of extraordinary glamour and good fortune, taking us from the corridors of Ledbury Park, her grandparents’ home, to the whirl of Rome in the Fifties; from high-society London to parties on Mustique, where she still has a house. A long way from 1945 when she joined the Sadler’s Wells Ballet School, aged just 14, rubbing tutus with Margot Fonteyn and Moira Shearer. Back then she was Josephine Lowry-Corry, only child of the short-lived marriage between Montagu Lowry-Corry, a Grenadier Guard, and Mary Constance Biddulph, daughter of Lord and Lady Biddulph.
Rolling Stone Magazine Collection. Issues #12 through #240 complete. From June 1968 to June 1977. Most are Very Good, many are Excellent, a few are VG- or Good. See the list below. I call this the Jean Rose Collection. The vast majority of these magazines are in Very Good condition. Many of them are in Excellent condition, and only a few would be rated Good. None of these magazines are in Poor condition. They all show various signs of aging. Many have edges that are dense with brown aging spots. Not bad considering I found them in two piles on a basement floor in Haight Ashbury. Jean Rose still lived at 219 Carl St in San Francisco when she answered my ad in the late 90’s. Jean Colon was featured in Rolling Stone issue #11 for the hip clothing she designed and made for members of Jefferson Airplane. As she related it to me, she became friends with Baron Wolman, Rolling Stone’s Photographer, and he “hooked her up” with a subscription to Rolling Stone. She changed her name to Jean Rose and opened a clothing store called Cactus Patch Soup, names you’ll see on the later labels. This collection of magazines was stored, unbagged, at Jean’s home for over 20 years. Fortunately, the older ones were on the top of one of the piles, so they are in very good shape. Later ones were on the bottom, so those were in the worst shape. In time I replaced the badly damaged issues, and by 1999 each magazine was in an archival plastic bag. The collection has been stored in a cool, dry place ever since. I really got into it at the time and feel like I learned a lot. I’m basing my ratings on personal experience. As a whole I’d rate the entire collection as Very Good. Most issue are VG and VG+. Quite a few are Excellent, and many of those lack a mailing label, including some key issues. I wish I could show more images to show off more of the choice items. The photos above are of this collection, and are high res so you can zoom in. I’ve also shown the worst of the damaged issues individually, so you shouldn’t be surprised. I’ve also described all 29 of the issues that I rated less than VG. If you want to see more images, let me know. I do rate 9 issues as Good, mostly because of tears on the back cover, missing corners, separation at the staples, and/or writing on the front cover, but nothing key is missing. Every issue is complete and readable. The first 6 of my images are groupings that show the entire collection in their bags. Somehow I skipped #177, 178 & 179, but they are present. I Included an image of #177 and #178 which illustrates the variation in conditions. #177 is one of 9 that I rated Good or Good+. (See list below) I rated #178 VG+. 3 images show the worst of the issues that I’ve rated Good. They are #149, 153 and 231. See the descriptions below. (Also see notes on #63, but since that tear was almost certainly done by Jean Rose to order the album, I think it’s historically cool) Nothing will be worse than what you see in those images. Other images show early issues in VG+/Fine- condition. Trust me, the majority are like these. The following is just a sampling of early issues that I’ve rated Fine with NO mailing label; #17 Rick Griffin cover, #26 Hendrix cover, #37 Elvis Cover, #69 Jimi Hendrix memorial. #34 & #35 are Fine- due to a little tanning around the edges. Only a few of the earlier issues are less than VG+. The earliest issues are in surprisingly good shape. #14 is VG due to a light spattering of tan aging spots. #15 is VG due to a small number of tan aging spots and a ½ break in the spine. #16 and #17 are VG+. #18 is Fine- with a mailing label. #19 through #30 are all VG+ and Fine. Notes: Issue #22 has the Bob Dylan poster but does not have the John and Yoko nude foldout. Issue #30 has the insert “American Revolution” A Rolling Stone Special Issue. #12 Bob Dylan – Is just barely VG due to aging of paper. The cover is covered in faint tan spots. Top of the pile. The right edges of several pages are frayed. Below is a list of all 29 issues that I’ve rated VG- or Good for various reasons (29 out of 229). 20 are rated VG- and 9 are rated Good. Only 5 issues out of these 29 are in the first 100 issues. #39 Brian Jones – VG- due to a 1 circular area of faint yellow translucent stain that encroaches on the image. #45 Tina Turner – Good+ due to bold writing on the cover that encroaches on image. #63 David Crosby – Good due to a large tear of the back cover which includes the spine. 3″ x 9″ area of paper missing across bottom of back cover. Order form was removed. #70 Grace Slick – VG- due to writing in the bottom margin of the cover. #79 Nicholas Johnson – VG- due to a 1/2″ x 1″ hole in the LL corner of cover. #105 Alice Cooper – VG- due to writing in margin of cover. #110 George McGovern illustration – VG- due to stain on cover. #122 Joe Pimp – VG- due to damage to LR corner of cover margin and several underlying pages. #124 Keith Moon – VG- because right edge of cover and first few pages are frayed. No other issues are frayed this bad. There is also a circle with an X faintly drawn in ink on the cover. #125 JT and Carly Simon – VG- due to ½” by 2″ damage to paper in LR corner of cover. The LR corner of a several pages are frayed. Hook – VG- Due to writing in the margin of the cover. #138 Paul Newman – VG- due to 6 break in spine. VG- due to an ink doodle in LL corner of cover margin. #149 Gregg Allman – Good+ because of a 3 circle of water damage near spine at mid-point. 1/2″ hole in cover, 3/4″ hole in spine. Water warping and discoloration. #152 Illustration – VG- due to writing in the margin of cover. #153 Paul and Linda – VG- due to a tear of the lower edge of the back cover. 1″ x 6″ of paper missing. #162 Uncle Sam illus. Good+ due to a 6 tear in the spine from the top down. #169 Nixon – VG- due to a 1/2″ x 1″ dark substance on the cover near left edge. #177 Suzi Quatro – Good+ due to a. 1½ paper tear and hole in spine area with paper loss on front and back cover. Image shows cover opened. Tear does not disturb cover image. This issue also has a 2 band of age spotting along bottom edge. #183 Linda Ronstadt – VG- due to a 2 tear and paper damage in LL corner of cover. #195 Mick Jagger – VG- due to a tear in the back cover, LL corner with missing paper, 1″ x 1″. #199 Roc Stewart – VG- due to a 3 tear in top edge of back cover and last page which have been taped. #200 Randolph Hearst – VG- due to a 3 tear in center of front cover. 1 tear in edge of back cover. #223 Elton John – Rated Good because spine is broken at both staples, with 1 tears into cover.
